This was an important time in New Zealand - the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, William Hobson chose Auckland as the site for the new capital, and thousands of immigrants were arriving each year to start up a new life.

Wharfside
By the 1870s, immigrants stepped ashore on the substantial wharves of well-developed ports. The Lady Jocelyn, seen here berthed at a wharf, made several voyages between Britain and New Zealand.
